Toyota Sales Data, Trends, Analysis & Current Lineup for the U.S Automotive Market
This is your hub for all of the Toyota sales data for the U.S market. Toyota has been the #1 Japanese manufacturer in the US for many years, and the only one to really challenge the top US brands such as Chevrolet and Ford. That said, it suffered a further drop during the late 2000s crisis than most of its competitors, seeing its sales fall from over 2m/year in 2006 to drop below 1.4m in 2011. However, it has rebounded strongly since, and in 2014 it’s been above 2m/year again. Toyota’s best sellers in the United States are the RAV4 and Camry.
The success of Toyota stems from offering dependable, inoffensive and reasonably-priced cars, or, if you’re a bit more cynical, from being the closest to a white-good carmaker, in essence the automotive equivalent of a toaster oven or a dishwasher. In recent years it has upped its styling game to make its cars more appealing and that appears to work for it. No matter what your view may be, though, you can’t argue with the numbers: it has five segment-leading cars, from the Compact (Corolla), Mid-sized (Camry), Compact Crossover (RAV4), Small Pickup (Tacoma) through to Alternative Power (with its hybrids), as well as the Highlander (#2 Mid-sized SUV), Avalon (#2 Large). In some way Toyota is in the US like VW is in Europe – any segment it touches it does well in.
Toyota has been one of the top-selling brands in the United States for a number years. It is the de facto number one best-selling Japanese brand in the country and is the only foreign brand to seriously challenge the top US car brands such as Chevrolet, Chrysler, and Ford.
Toyota is also currently the number one car manufacturer in the world when it comes to production volume. The company has been around for more than 75 years. It originally started as a small division of a Japanese weaving company and has grown so much that it turned into the world’s most respected reliable automotive brands today.
Toyota U.S Sales Figures & Recent Highlights
When it comes to sales figures, Toyota as a brand and as a company, is considered to be a juggernaut that rivals against the likes of the Ford, Chrysler, and GMC. Toyota’s sales performance in the US is so successful that five of its cars leads five different segments from compact, mid-sized sedan, compact crossover, small pickup to hybrids. Every car segment that Toyota touches, it will most likely become the leader or one of the leaders when it comes to sales figures.
Toyota is not without down years though. After seeing its sales grow over 2 million from 2006 to 2007, their sales dropped below that figures from 2008 to 2013. They’ve done well, however, to recover strongly since 2014 and has been above the 2 million per year since then. Toyota has been the best-selling automaker in the United States for many years. In 2022, Toyota sold 2,108,458 vehicles in the U.S., a decrease of 9.6% from 2021. However, Toyota’s sales trends in the U.S. have been mixed over the last few years. In 2020, Toyota’s sales increased by 10.4%, but in 2021, they decreased by 3.7%. Despite these challenges, Toyota remains the best-selling automaker in the United States. The company is committed to meeting the needs of its customers, and it is investing in new technologies, such as electric vehicles.
Toyota’s success, especially in the US, is no accident. The success of the brand has been cultivated through high quality design, unyielding innovation, and bold moves which took them years and years to develop. Toyota is responsible for some of the most impressive sports cars ever produced. And they’re also known for the dependability and class of their economy sedans.

Starting at ~$55,000
The 2024 Land Cruiser comes in 1958, Land Cruiser, and First Edition grades, with the base price for the 1958 model teased at the mid-$50,000 range. Every Land Cruiser features a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that delivers 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. All TLCs have full-time four-wheel drive with locking center and rear differentials; a disconnecting front anti-roll bar and 33-inch tires are also available. It is to be expected that Toyota would not walk away from this iconic vehicle. Instead, the automaker called a time out and used it to engineer a clean break from the Land Cruiser’s increasingly expensive and bloated mall-cruiser trajectory. This desirable off-roader has stayed faithful to the original concept, but Toyota made a determined effort to return this off-road SUV to a more mainstream price point.
