Toyota Mirai Sales Figures

Toyota Mirai

Here you will find monthly and yearly Canadian and U.S. sales figures for the Toyota Mirai. It is an electric vehicle that converts hydrogen from its fuel tanks and oxygen from the air into water, thus producing the energy to propel the vehicle. The technology is still expensive and there aren’t many hydrogen fuel stations in Europe yet, so its potential market is limited.

Toyota Mirai Overview

The Toyota Mirai is a groundbreaking vehicle in Toyota’s lineup, primarily because it is one of the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) offered for sale to the general public. The name “Mirai” fittingly means “future” in Japanese, symbolizing Toyota’s vision for a hydrogen-based clean energy future.

Toyota unveiled the Mirai in 2014 and began sales in 2015, initially in Japan, followed by select markets like California in the USA, where hydrogen refueling infrastructure was beginning to develop. At the heart of the Mirai is a hydrogen fuel cell stack. The vehicle uses hydrogen gas stored in onboard tanks. When this hydrogen is fed into the fuel cell stack, it reacts with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, which powers the vehicle’s electric motor. The only byproduct of this process is water, making the Mirai an emission-free vehicle.

The Mirai is available in two trim levels: XLE and Limited. The XLE trim comes standard with features like a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a JBL sound system, and a panoramic sunroof. The Limited trim adds features like a heated steering wheel, a heated front passenger seat, and a leather-wrapped interior. The Mirai has a driving range of up to 402 miles on a full tank of hydrogen. It can be refueled in about 5 minutes.

The Mirai has been received as a technological marvel, showcasing Toyota’s commitment to alternative energy solutions. However, sales have been limited, primarily due to the aforementioned infrastructure challenges and the higher cost compared to BEVs or traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
