The Renault Laguna is a mid-sized family car produced by the French automaker Renault. It replaced the Renault 21 in the 1990s and has since been through several generations. Over its life cycle, the Laguna has been recognized for its design, technological features, and safety attributes.

Renault Laguna Overview

The Laguna was first introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the Renault 21. It was aimed at the mid-sized family car segment, competing with the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat, and Opel/Vauxhall Vectra.

The original Laguna was available in both hatchback and estate versions. It was appreciated for its comfort, safety, and equipment levels. In 1997, it became one of the first cars to achieve a 4-star Euro NCAP safety rating. This generation introduced a more contemporary design and advanced features, such as a keyless entry and ignition system. It further bolstered its safety credentials by becoming one of the first cars to achieve a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. With a further refined design, the third-gen Laguna came in hatchback, estate (called the Laguna Sport Tourer), and coupé body styles. While it was packed with technology and had a plush interior, this generation faced stiff competition in the segment.

The Laguna was eventually replaced by the Renault Talisman in 2015, marking the end of the nameplate’s presence in Renault’s lineup after more than two decades.
