Nissan Axxess
The second generation Nissan Prairie was called the Axxess in the United States (and Canada), and it replaced the Stanza Wagon, which was known as the first generation Prairie outside North America. The Nissan Axxess was only sold in the US for the 1990 model year, with just over 18,000 sales in three calendar years.
Nissan Axxess Overview
The Nissan Axxess is a compact MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) or minivan that was produced by Nissan in the early 1990s. In some markets, it was known as the Nissan Prairie or the Nissan Stanza Wagon. The Nissan Axxess was introduced in North America for the 1990 model year. It was short-lived in the U.S., with sales lasting only for the 1990 model year, though it had a longer run in other markets.
The Axxess was designed as a compact MPV with sliding doors on both sides, which was a novelty for passenger vehicles of its time. The Axxess occupied a somewhat niche segment in North America, given the prevailing popularity of larger minivans and SUVs. It was more aligned with the European concept of an MPV, offering van-like utility in a smaller, car-like package. The Axxess received positive reviews for its practicality and versatility but faced stiff competition in the North American market from other, often larger, minivans.
Nissan Axxess Sales Figures
In the U.S., after its short run, the Axxess was essentially replaced by the Nissan Quest in terms of fulfilling the minivan role in Nissan’s lineup. Outside of North America, the Axxess/Prairie had a longer production run and saw several generations, making it a more established nameplate in places like Europe and Japan.
