Mazda MPV

The Mazda MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) was a minivan introduced by Mazda in 1988 and was sold until the early 2010s. It was designed as a versatile vehicle that could cater to families and those requiring more spacious interiors.

Mazda MPV Overview

The Mazda MPV (Multi-Purpose Passenger Vehicle) is a minivan manufactured by Mazda. Introduced in 1988 as a rear-wheel-drive model with optional selectable four-wheel drive, this was replaced in 1999 with a front-wheel-drive version with optional all-wheel-drive in some markets. Over one million MPV models have been produced since its introduction.

Introduced in 1988, the MPV was notable because it was rear-wheel drive, contrasting with most other minivans of the era. Initially, it was available with either a 2.6L inline-four or a 3.0L V6 engine. In 1996, the MPV got a significant update, including the introduction of a four-wheel-drive option.

In 1999, Mazda switched the MPV to a front-wheel-drive platform for its second generation, aligning it more closely with other minivans in its class. This generation was offered with a 2.0L inline-four engine in some markets, while others, like the U.S., received a 2.5L V6, later replaced by a 3.0L V6. The second-gen MPV was known for its “Rolling Sky” rear-seat moonroof and its power sliding doors.

The third generation, largely sold in Japan, marked a significant departure in terms of design. Instead of a minivan, it was more of a large MPV or crossover. This generation was not sold in North America, where the Mazda5 effectively replaced the MPV. It featured “Karakuri” seating, which provided flexible seating arrangements. Powertrain options included a 2.3L inline-four gasoline engine and a 2.0L diesel option.

The Mazda MPV was eventually phased out in favor of other vehicles in Mazda’s lineup, like the Mazda5 in North America or the newer Mazda CX series globally. The MPV earned a reputation as a reliable and practical vehicle, especially for families, throughout its production run.
