Africa Passenger Car Sales for 2017

In 2017, the African automotive market experienced a mixed landscape with both positive and challenging trends in car sales across different countries. South Africa remained the largest car market in Africa in 2017. The country’s automotive industry faced some challenges due to slow economic growth and political uncertainty. As a result, car sales growth was moderate/flat but the numbers frankly seem a little suspect this year.

Countries like Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria have witnessed varying trends in car sales. Algeria’s and Morocco’s automotive industries showed resilience, with increased local production and sales. Morocco’s efforts to attract foreign investment in its automotive sector continued to yield positive results, and car sales saw growth. Algeria faced some challenges due to economic factors and a decline in oil prices, which impacted consumer purchasing power and resulted in a slowdown in car sales. Egypt got hammered in 2017, with sales down 53%, much like smaller Libyam, which saw sales drop 65%.
